    Description

This is a kingwood (a type of rosewood) Yamaha 841 Custom professional oboe in excellent condition.  The top joint is new as of December 2019 and has been carefully broken in over the past 21 months - no cracks!  The bottom joint and bell were new in 2013.  The oboe has been played roughly 20 hours in total since the top joint was replaced in December 2019, meaning this oboe has a loooong playing life ahead of it!  Plus, Yamaha has discontinued the kingwood models, so these are quickly becoming fewer and farther in between.
The coloration of this oboe is absolutely gorgeous with brown, red, violet, purple, and tan streaks throughout the body of the instrument, and the wood on all three joints is in fantastic condition.  During the top joint break-in period I have oiled it regularly with organic sweet almond oil, kept a Humistat humidifier in the case, and have never played it outside.
This oboe is a full-conservatory model which includes 3rd octave, Philly high D key, low Bb resonance, left-hand F, and all trill keys.  All keys function properly and all pads and corks are in excellent condition.  The top joint seals like a monster!  The keywork is in excellent condition as can be seen in the photos.  No scratches or plating wear anywhere.
Since kingwood is a lighter wood that is less dense than grenadilla, this oboe possesses a very warm, thick, VERY mellow sound that would be perfect for chamber music.  I have also briefly played it in a full orchestral setting and found it to be completely capable of projecting in larger settings as well.  Intonation is absolutely spot-on throughout the range of the instrument, and the high register is especially nice - not sharp at all, which is a very welcome change from many other professional oboes I have played over the years.  Yamaha has really hit the nail on the head with the scale of these instruments, as each Custom model (831 and 841) I have played - both in kingwood and also in traditional grenadilla - has possessed the same absolutely effortless pitch stability.
The lower register of this particular oboe, to me, is extremely similar to that of a Marigaux - very full, rich, and dark, with excellent response.  The middle register is free and clear, and the upper register is direct, in tune, and sings with ease.  I find I am able to get plenty of resonance and overtones out of the oboe with my personal setup which includes a mix of traditional cork staples and Winfield (metal) staples, though the cork staples do seem to allow for more "bloom" to the sound, overall.
I have consistently received comments from other musicians about how "mellow" and how "thick" the sound of this oboe is, and having played it back to back with multiple Loree "AK" models, a Rigoutat, and a Howarth, I can absolutely hear the difference in thickness and "roundness" of tone compared with each of these other brands.
What I find to be perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of playing this oboe is that there really is no hunting to find the correct pitch from note to note: The oboe does what it is told, which I feel makes playing much, much easier since the instrument actually seems to want to do some of the work for the player.  I have played on several makes of oboe in my 25 years of oboe playing and have never once felt the need to "fight" this oboe, unlike other makes and models I have played, for any reason.  Most if not all other brands have a bad note or two here and there which require adjustments to embouchure or fingerings to bring up or down to pitch, but this oboe simply has a flawless scale and ease of response which truly makes it a joy to play.  It truly is a fantastic gem of an instrument that will make its new owner very happy and very proud.
Comes in the traditional Yamaha Custom case with the newly-designed Yamaha case cover with multiple outside zippered storage pockets and interior compartments for pencils, tuner, swabs, etc.  I will also include the Humistat humidifier to maintain consistent humidity during transit.
