Theo Markardt Eribach Professional Oboe - Germany, Moennig, Excellent!.
For sale is this excellent Theo Markardt oboe, made in Eribach, Germany. I have been told by an acquaintance with much deeper expertise than I that Markardt is a well-respected maker and that it was acquired by Moennig in the 70s. I do not know the age of this instrument.
The oboe is in overall excellent physical condition, but will need servicing and adjustment in order to be fully playable.
The oboe features a fully automatic octave system, modern ringed keywork, an F roller, left hand F key, low Bb, a side Bb key, and an interesting vent key opposite the Regular F, which I am unfamiliar with.
The mechanism is in very good condition. It is beautiful, extremely heavy-duty, and seems to be very well made. Durable would be an understatement - it’s built like a tank. It has heavy silver plating that shows some wear on the upper joint rings and half-hole, but is otherwise in excellent condition. Ergonomically the instrument feels very good - I have large hands and it is very comfortable to hold.
The wood body is beautiful. I do not see any cracks or evidence of repairs. I assume it is made of Grenadilla. The color is a deep chestnut color with tight grain.
It plays a bit, but as I said it will need some servicing. At the very least a good adjustment and some cleaning. The notes that I am able to get out have a very, very dark rich sound. The sound is quite heavy, like the instrument. I am not familiar enough with the German modern ring system or auto octave to attempt adjusting this, or to use it. I’m passing it along to someone who will give it a better home.
The oboe will come in a newer SKB hard plastic case in excellent condition.
