Selmer Model 104 Professional Synthetic Oboe - Original Soloist W/Upgrades.
Up for sale is this excellent professional Selmer model 104 synthetic oboe. This is hard to find, the original incarnation of the 104 branded as the “Signet Solosit” under Selmer’s step-up line. In contrast to the modern 104s this has a superior synthetic body that is slightly more dense and has slightly thicker walls. It also has a larger left F mechanism.
The instrument is full conservatory including all trills, low Bb, left F, alt C, and articulated C# key. It also has a Philadelphia D Mechanism for stability and east on high D.
When I acquired this several years ago, I was playing frequently during summers, and using it for outdoor concerts since it is synthetic and cracking is not an issue. I had it overhauled and had several upgrades done including cork pads all the way down to Low C and Teflon tips on most adjustment screws. More recently I’ve used it as a loaner to friends and students.
While Selmer is an infrequent oboe choice for pros, this particular model is great. It has full keywork, a nice scale, nice round sound, and a very reliable mechanism. It plays well I tune, and a surprising variety of tone color. It’s great horn to have for outdoor playing without fear of cracks or issues with humidity. It’s also very lightweight. This particular early model has a slightly different (imo superior) bore and bell design to the modern 104s and is becoming tough to find in good condition.
The oboe plays well, but hasn’t been to the shop for a few years, so the keywork is a bit “clicky.” I would recommend some adjustment and maybe a couple new bumpers for higher level playing. Because the oboe was set up professionally when the upgrades were completed, I would recommend using a good double reed shop. The oboe itself is in extremely good condition. Very, very clean and sanitized. Body and mechanism are in excellent condition. Cosmetically the oboe is 9.9/10.
The oboe comes in the original leather covered French Selmer case. The case shows signs of west, but it in hood, clean, functional condition. It protects the instrument well.
This would be an excellent instrument for an advanced student, or as a second instrument for a professional or college student. It would also make a great, reliable, light horn for a doubler. These are also excellent school instruments due to their durability.
