    Description

    K9 Choice Melatonin 5 mg
    1
80 tablets for dogs. 180 servings (see dosage suggestions below)
Our melatonin, specifically created for dogs, can help with the following*:
    Inhibit aromatase enzymes in dogs
Manage symptoms of Cushings in dogs
    Hair loss in dogs
Anxiety due to separation, fireworks, thunderstorms or other stressful events
Reduce elevated cortisol or sex steroid levels
Melatonin, reported to be an immune system booster, is a well known antioxidant. Studies indicate that when used in conjunction with flaxseed lignans or HMR lignans, melatonin supports the endocrine system in dogs and may reduce cortisol levels. Elevated levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, are associated with Cushings in dogs. Melatonin inhibits hydroxylase enzyme in order to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Additionally, chronic Cushings can lead to diabetes, and supplementation with melatonin may be helpful because low levels of melatonin have been linked with diabetes.*
Veterinarians often recommend melatonin, along with lignans, as a first option to address the symptoms of dogs with Cushings because it is natural, inexpensive, gentle on aging dogs, and it cannot cause Adison's disease, which is a risk of many steroid or chemotherapy options. Unlike harsher drugs, ongoing testing of the Cushingoid dog is not required when using lignans and melatonin.
The University of Tennessee Endocrinology department, an authority on adrenal disorders, has performed multiple studies on lignans and melatonin as a treatment option for Cushing's disease. Their findings have shown that lignans and melatonin each inhibit different enzymes needed in the production of cortisol and can effectively reduce heightened cortisol levels in dogs with Canine Cushings Disease. While Cushing's cannot be cured, the symptoms of the disease - most of which are a result of increased cortisol levels - can be managed, improving the affected dog's comfort levels and overall quality of life.
    Dosage recommendations:
For dogs over 30 lbs: give 5-6 mg of melatonin (1 tablet) every 12 hours
For dogs with separation (or other types of) anxiety, give 1 tablet 30-60 minutes before stressful event.
