Diameter will define the opening. ( this is the circumference of the cane ) The most common used is 10.50 . The choices start from 10.00 the smallest circumference and it will give you the biggest opening. Too 11.00 the largest this will give you a smaller opening. the lower number = bigger opening The bigger opening you start with the (softer = thinner) you will need to make the reed. The (harder = thicker ) the reed the more stable it will be. You will want to work your way to a harder reed they will be more stable and last longer. Keep in mind the tip of the reed should remain the same no matter the thickness adjustment is made from the heart to the tip and in the windows. Try to keep the heart as thick as you can and the tip as thin as the cane will allow. So for most players shaper size #1 and Diameter 10.50 will be the best choice. From there you can customize reeds to your liking. So if you think you would like a reed that supports high notes better then you may choice a narrow shaper size. Or if you want a bigger opening you may want to go with a smaller diameter cane. I recommend getting a copy of Jay Light reed making Book it has a great step by step on oboe reed making, and will help explain what I am trying to explain. Any Questions please feel free to ask me
